During the Spring break in March, a group of MBA students worked with academics from various universities in Istanbul to explore the impact of changes in the national context\u00a0on global\u00a0economic development. \u00a0This was part\u00a0of an elective course on Comparative Management that started in Riyadh by studying the historical\u00a0interaction between Saudi Arabia and Turkey.\u00a0\u00a0Turkey was the ideal context to study the impact of historic\u00a0national and international\u00a0changes on economic development. \u00a0This country is now one of the top 20 economies in the world, while it went through two major historical periods of change which are still clearly visible throughout the city\u00a0and the\u00a0community.<\/p>\n

Working with leading economists and historians, the MBA\u00a0students got a first-hand view of the influence of Turkish history on current social, cultural and economic activity. \u00a0We were impressed with the way in which Turkey capitalised on historical and cultural expression in their modern approaches and the\u00a0careful way that this heritage was kept alive. \u00a0We tried to practice ancient Islamic\u00a0art forms that are still actively used in\u00a0Turkey. \u00a0We saw the active way that mosques and charitable organisations\u00a0are\u00a0playing a role in the society\u2019s development. \u00a0We\u00a0also discussed current and future\u00a0economic policy with the\u00a0president\u2019s chief\u00a0economic advisor. \u00a0In addition, we explored\u00a0entrepreneurial challenges with Turkish entrepreneurs and members of their national research council (who plays an active\u00a0role in linking academic research with business practices).<\/p>\n

Our major findings were that keys to global\u00a0success are more\u00a0than fiscal policy. \u00a0Success also depends upon the need to\u00a0base decisions upon thorough evidence, to practice what you preach, and to nurture your past and your culture to continuously maintain\u00a0an identity that fosters global competitiveness. \u00a0And while walking around the\u00a0campus of the Bosphorus University, overlooking the magnificent views of the famous strait with the same name, we were convinced that future growth is also firmly in the hands of the future generation of Saudi Arabian MBA\u00a0students.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
