In November 2021, the College of Engineering and Dimensions held Alfaisal Model Mania® in 2021, the first Mechanical Design Contest using CAD modeling skills. Alfaisal Model Mania® is a local Engineering Design Challenge oriented mainly to Engineering students in Alfaisal University on the 10th & 11th of November 2021. The origin of the challenge is the global Model Mania® design challenge; SolidWorks has been holding it annually over the past 22 years. The Scopes of the contest are Accuracy and Speed 3D Modeling using SolidWorks from a given 2D drawing.
Fifteen students participated from 4 engineering majors, Industrial, Mechanical, Electrical, and Software Engineering. The challenge kicked off on Wednesday 10th of November, in the advanced technology lab. The participating students modeled the part in a duration ranging between 7mins to more than one hour and with an inaccuracy error of -30% to +20%. The results were filtered with an acceptable accuracy variation of ±1% and 100% size accuracy, then ranked according to speed.
The first winner of 4,000 SAR is Latifa Alhgbani, duration: 7 mins 9 seconds and an accuracy error: -0.31%.
The second winner of 2,500 SAR is Doha Melliti, duration: 7 mins 59 seconds and accuracy error: -0.30%.
The third winner of 1,500 SAR is Abeer Shiraz Khan, duration: 9 mins 23 seconds and an accuracy error: -0.30%.
The winners were awarded in a ceremony attended by Dr. Muhammad Anan, College of Engineering Dean, Dr. Zuruzi AbuSamah, Mechanical Engineering Department Chair, Dr. Abd-Elhamid M. Taha, Director of Innovation and Research, Ms. Nouf Alammar, Student Accelerator Supervisor. In addition, Mr. Mark Schneider, the global Model Mania® organizer, attended the ceremony too.
Alfaisal Model Mania® 2021 was organized by Eng. Aliaa Maar, Mechanical Engineering instructor as a part of the Computer-Aided Design class. Eng. Aliaa is proud that two of the winner are current CAD students! In addition, Maar expressed that the challenge should be a constant annual challenge to motivate the students to develop their modeling skills.
Special thanks and appreciation for the help and support to Eng. Ahmad Kanbar, Certified SolidWorks Professional, Mechanical Engineering Alumni, and Subject Matter Expert -Mechanical Engineer at SNC Lavalin. In addition, the thanks are extended to Eng. Basil Lutfi, Mechanical Engineering Alumni and CAD teacher assistant, for helping with the event logistics and the results filtering.
Finally, many thanks to Dimensions for sponsoring the event, Office of Research, Innovation, and Graduate Studies for helping to allocate the sponsorship.
