On Monday the 13th of November, the Pharmacy Student Association arranged a campus event to raise awareness for the appropriate use of antibiotics. The activation started with a primer on the history of antibiotics, emphasizing their importance in preventing disease complications and increasing life expectancy.
This was followed by an explanation of the types, mechanisms and side effects of antibiotics Lastly, students emphasized the risks associated with over prescription, overuse and misuse of antibiotics, explaining common differences between viral infections and bacterial infections.
Antibiotics are used to treat bacterial infections and are ineffective against viral infections. Anti-microbial resistance is a pressing global health challenge characterized by the diminishing effectiveness of antimicrobial drugs against infections caused by resistant microorganisms – antibiotic overuse is accelerating this phenomenon significantly.
