On November 25, 2024, students from the ARE 232 (Building Construction) course at the College of Engineering, Architecture Department, visited the historic Al Maather Palace, home to His Royal Highness the Late King Faisal, currently undergoing extensive restoration.
The visit aimed to provide students with firsthand exposure to restoration techniques used to preserve and repair historical buildings. Students observed the meticulous processes involved in restoring finishes, joinery, building systems, and decorative details to their original conditions, all aligned with UNESCO standards.
Guided by the contractor’s project manager and site engineers, students explored restored interiors and external facades while learning about the challenges of sourcing materials and replicating original features. They also engaged in discussions about the scientific methods applied to preserve finishes and ensure durability.
This enriching experience and exchange with site architects’ engineers and project manager, allowed them to advance their knowledge with real-world practices, offering insights into architectural restoration and construction.
Special thanks to all faculty, contractors, and collaborators who made this visit possible, including the Dean of the College of Engineering, Dr. M. Anan, and the Chair of the Architecture Department, Dr. A. Alyamani, Arch. Raghad Al Shibi (KFF), Dr. Ibrahim Al Saudi and Engr Raed Alsarraj.
