College of Engineering organized a seminar on Additive Manufacturing, as a part of Engineering Week, on 17th of February 2019. The seminar was presented by Eng. Abdulrahman Jilani, a specialist in additive manufacturing at the Innovation Center for Industry 4.0 at KACST.
Additive Manufacturing (AM) is a technology that build 3D objects by adding layer-upon-layer of material. This process involves modelling using special CAD software, translating the design into a layer by layer framework and print it using a 3D printer.
Eng. Abdulrahman started the presentation with the history behind the technology. The major benefits of AM in industry as well as different technologies involved in 3D printing like fused deposition modelling (FDM), stereolithography (SLA), and selective laser sintering (SLS) were well explained. He showcased various models manufactured using 3D printing and mentioned about the career opportunities for engineering students in this field. The lecture was really engaging and informative. Faculties and students from CoE attended the event.
