On Sunday, the 21st of May, Alfaisal alumna Rayyanah Barnawi took to space as a mission specialist for the Axiom Mission 2, making her the first ever Saudi woman in space. Ever since receiving her Master of Biomedical Science with first honors at Alfaisal University, Rayyanah has dedicated her life to scientific research and exploration with her decade-long career in stem cell research and tissue re-engineering. During her time at the International Space Station, Rayyannah conducted experiments that will increase our understanding of biological changes that can occur in space.
To mark the occasion, the downstairs atrium of the Alfaisal campus was host to a timeline exhibit presenting Rayyanah’s scientific journey and the key research interests of the Ax-2 mission. The Alfaisal community celebrated Rayyanah and her contributions to science, the nation and humanity with immense pride and joy. Regarding Rayyanah, our VP of External Relations and Advancement HRH Dr. Maha bint Mishari Al Saud says “She is breaking barriers and charting new grounds for the scientific progress of this nation. Every young Saudi can see themselves reflected in our astronauts, this is the inspiration and representation our young generation needs. This is the proof that awakens the will in our society to contribute to our aspirations- the Saudi Vision 2030”. The historic 10-day mission drew to an end on Wednesday, May 31st, at 6:04 AM with Rayyanah and the Ax-2 crew returning back to Earth successfully.
