On the 27th of February, a female Electrical and Software Engineering student team participated in the Second Female Hackathon 2022 and won the first award. The winning team members are Yasmeen A. Dabbagh, Nouf Farhoud, Noura AlSaawi, Layali Elkordi, and Lama Alshammari.
PwC Hackathon 2022 aims to promote the culture of innovation and problem-solving among female Computer Science and Engineering students; the competition was for developing practical solutions to a real-world problem, leveraging emerging technologies and Design Thinking.
The winning project is called “PillSpenser,” which aims to help healthcare providers to track their patients’ medications in remote and rural areas. PillSpenser also supports the patients with hearing and vision disabilities to take their medicines on time and get prompt support from their doctors through visual and audio notifications.
The PillSpenser is an integrated system with a mobile app interface, pills dispenser, and smartwatch to keep track of the patients’ vital signs. The system used blockchain technology to achieve better data security and give only the stockholders access to the patients’ data. The project proposes to use a solar panel-battery system as a source of power.
Yasmeen A. Dabbagh expressed, “It was an honor to represent Alfaisal University at the PwC Middle East 2022 Hackathon and my colleagues where we had the chance to develop a solution to improve healthcare in rural areas using emerging technologies in which our project won first place!”.
Dr. Muhammad Anan, Acting Dean of Engineering, expressed his gratitude and pride in this achievement and commented: “National and international competitions are platforms for the students to demonstrate their knowledge and skills. Therefore, receiving the first award in PwC hackathon attests to the quality of Alfaisal’s Engineering students”.
