Chemo-Informatics and the Role of AI in Modeling Chemical and Pharmaceutical Data for Drug Discovery

Alfaisal University’s AI Seminar Series explores ways artificial intelligence (AI) can benefit society, our environment, and the economy. In weekly talks, leaders from academia, industry, and NGOs, who are at the forefront of using AI for social good, showcase AI applications that are forging positive changes in healthcare, the environment, education, technology, government and more. Like the AI Center itself, the seminar series has a broad scope, covering both new methodological contributions, ground-breaking applications, and impacts on society.

Seminar on Dec 28, 2021

On Tuesday, Dec 28th, the College of Engineering hosted Dr. Shrooq Alsenan, Assistant Professor of Informatics at Prince Sultan University for a seminar titled, “Chemo-Informatics and the Role of AI in Modeling Chemical and Pharmaceutical Data for Drug Discovery” as part of the AI Seminar Series. The seminar started with opening remarks, presented by the Director of Alfaisal’s AI Center, Dr. Areej Al-Wabil, welcoming the guest speaker and attendees to the research center’s AI Seminar Series.

In the seminar, Dr. Shrooq started by highlighting the important role of Chemo-informatics, which connects the modern information and data-driven world with computational modeling of molecular systems. Following that, she described the broad range of subjects under the umbrella of Chemo-Informatics that are related to the use of computers in chemistry, pharmacy, materials science and biology; from informatics and data science to atomistic modeling, and from fundamental academic research to industrial applications. Following that, Dr. Shrooq presented different approaches for managing and analyzing virtual chemical libraries and models, including the application of machine learning algorithms in drug discovery. Chemical information systems, software and databases, and molecular modeling were discussed along with use cases involving computer and molecular graphics, expert systems, QSAR, and data mining techniques.

The seminar was attended by students and faculty in the College of Engineering, College of Pharmacy, and the College of Medicine. The event concluded with thanking the speaker with a certificate from the Dean of Alfaisal’s College of Engineering, Dr. Mohammed Anan, which was presented on his behalf by the Vice Dean of Medicine, Dr. Dana Bakheet. Following that, an open discussion with the speaker was conducted to explore areas of mutual interest at Alfaisal University’s AI Center.
