Alfaisal College of Medicine students and faculty have their paper accepted for publication by International Journal of Angiology

Dr. Bernhard H.J. Juurlink, Professor of Anatomy & Cell Biology at the College of Medicine, Alfaisal University recently had two research papers accepted in International medical journals.

Dr. Bernhard’s paper “Gold nano-particles as a cell marker for synchrotron-based imaging” co authored by, Menk, R.H., E. Schültke, L. Rigon, C.H. Hall, F. Arfelli, L. Rigon, S. Rigley-MacDonald, A. Round, A. Astolfo, K. Atael-Mannan was accepted in, Nanomedicine: Nanotechnology, Biology and Medicine, January 27, 201. In this paper the authors demonstrate that labeling cells with gold nanoparticles allows their visualization using monochromatic x-rays as they proliferate and migrate within animal models of human disease. They also show that gold labelled mesenchymal stem cells home towards cancers. This ability to visualize will allow not only better understanding of cancer growth and metastases but using x-rays above the gold k-edge offers new opportunities to treat cancer.

“The effect of spinal manipulations on imbalances in leg strength”, co-authored by Chilibeck, P.D., S.M. Cornish, A. Schulte, N. Jantz, C. Magnus, S. Schwanbeck was another paper accepted in Journal of the Canadian Chiropractic Association, January 31, 2011.
Imbalance of strength between two limbs can increase athletic injuries and increase the incidence of falls in the elderly. In this paper the authors have unequivocally shown that a single chiropractic manipulation can decrease the imbalance of limb strength immediately. They are currently extending these studies with clinical colleagues using MRI to test the hypothesis that such chiropractic manipulations alter possible entrapment of the spinal nerves as the pass through the intervertebral foramina – the results so far are intriguing. Chiropractic medicine is considered to be bogus medicine by most practitioners of modern Western medicine. Their research is showing that there may well be a biomedical basis for some forms of chiropractic medicine.
