In an outstanding display of academic and research dedication, Belal Nedal Sabbah, a fifth-year medical student at Alfaisal University, has been honored with the prestigious Alfaisal University Award for Scientific Excellence – the first of its kind. This recognition honors not only Belal’s excellence in scientific research, but also his tremendous effort in bridging science and society, his leadership in teaching and mentoring students in the realm of research, and his contributions to scientific literature as journal editor and reviewer.
In less than three years, Belal has set a new benchmark for research excellence at Alfaisal University, by making the remarkable achievement of publishing over 50 research papers prior to his graduation. Belal’s journey in research is marked by his profound contributions to the medical research community, with his work being published in over 17 high-impact journals. His research expertise is diverse, covering a wide range of methodologies from meta-analyses and systematic reviews to cohort studies and case reports, showcasing his versatile skillset. Belal has also presented and co-authored nearly 30 posters presented on Alfaisal University’s Annual Research Day.
Among his noteworthy works includes a systematic review on therapeutic modalities for Post-Acute COVID-19 Syndrome, published in the journal Clinical Microbiology and Infection. Not only was this study chosen as the Editor’s Choice for this journal, but it also emerged as the most viewed article in the issue.
Belal’s commitment to advancing medical knowledge extends beyond his research publications. During the summer of 2022, Belal completed a 3-month research tenure at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, USA, and continues to work with their esteemed clinicians today. His editorial expertise is also evident in his role as an Academic Editor for PLoS ONE, a journal renowned for its high impact factor and scientific rigor.
Belal has also demonstrated exceptional leadership qualities as the founder and director of the Alfaisal University Surgery Interest Group (SIG). Under his guidance, the SIG has hosted over 50 research and academic courses, drawing in thousands of attendees keen on learning about surgery and research. His previous role as the director of Alfaisal University’s International Office saw him creating numerous academic and research opportunities for Alfaisal University students internationally, under the Summer Program for International Research Internship and Training (SPIRIT). Belal’s initiative to help others excel in research also extends to the other universities around the Kingdom, where he has delivered several research courses attended by many.
As Belal receives the Alfaisal University Award for Scientific Excellence, it is clear that his achievements reflect not only his personal dedication but also the vibrant academic culture at Alfaisal University.
